Friends of the Earth Middle East Awarded the Mount Zion Foundation Award
Dormition Church - Mount Zion - Jerusalem

October 30, 2011
The Mount Zion Foundation has its seat at the Institute for Jewish-Christian Research (IJCF) at the University of Lucerne in Switzerland, and grants the Mount Zion Award every other year to persons of Jewish, Muslim or Christian faith, who have significantly contributed to the Jewish-Christian dialogue or to the understanding of the three Abrahamic religions, Judaism, Christianity and Islam, in Israel.

The presidents of the Foundation, Prof. Dr. Verena Lenzen, Director of the Institute for Jewish-Christian Research at the University of Lucerne, and the abbot of the Dormition Abbey in Jerusalem, Gregory Collins Benedikt Lindemann, will present the Mount Zion Award this year to Friends of the Earth Middle East, on October 30, 2011, at the Dormition Church, Mount Zion in Jerusalem.

Friends of the Earth Middle East (FoEME) is a unique organization that brings together Jordanian, Palestinian, and Israeli environmentalists. The organization's primary objective is the promotion of cooperative efforts to protect the region's shared environmental heritage. In so doing, FoEME seeks to advance both sustainable regional development and the creation of necessary conditions for lasting peace in the region. FoEME has offices in Amman, Bethlehem, and Tel-Aviv and is a member of Friends of the Earth International, the largest grassroots environmental organization in the world.

From the judges: "[FoEME's] work received our attention primarily because you bring together representatives of different nationalities and religions. You have succeeded, by way of example, in your projects, to promote life in several dimensions: water itself allows life; the peaceful use of shared water resources unifies people of different religions and nationalities. Your work undoubtedly makes an important contribution to the peaceful coexistence of nations in the Middle East."
