Through the Good Water Neighbors Project, FoEME has succeeded in partnering neighboring communities and their representatives – thus building an alliance promoting sustainable development. To this aim, two important Memorandums of Understandings were endorsed by Israeli and Jordanian Mayors in the last month.
On January 10th, 2007 a MoU was signed by Eng. Abdullah Salman, Mayor of Mu’az Bin Jabal Municipality in Jordan, and Israeli Mayors of the Jordan Valley Regional Council, Mr. Yossi Vardi and Beit She’an Valley Regional Council, Mr. Dani Tamari. The historic MoU recognized the value and importance of rehabilitating the Jordan River and identified the potential for advancing peace through creating a cross border park, based on ecological values and cultural heritage, at the Rotenburg/ Naharayim/ Gesher site. On January 17th, 2007 a MoU was signed between the Mayor of the Tamar Regional Council in Israel, Mr. Dov Litvinoff and the Governor of South Ghores in Jordan, Mr. Ghaleb Al-Shamayleh. The MoU asserts the importance of cooperation in resolving the infestation of flies in the area, the need for an additional border crossing in the Al-Safi and Neot Hakikar area and promoting sustainable development in the Southern Dead Sea Basin. Furthermore, the GWN project was highlighted in a special documentary on water and peace in the region produced by French television in cooperation with the renowned French photographer Mr. Yann Arthus-Bertrand.
Next week, FoEME's Good Water Neighbors project will convene a gathering of Mayors and municipal leaders from the 17 Jordanian, Palestinian and Israeli communities in Jordan. A hundred participants from the respective communities and the international community are expected to participate in this important event. During the program, municipal representatives will present draft proposals for cross border projects based on common solutions to shared environmental problems and or sustainable development initiatives developed through the GWN project.
The Good Water Neighbors Project is jointly funded by the European Union Partnership for Peace Program, the Richard and Rhoda Goldman Fund, and the British Government's Global Opportunities Fund. | |
