This month FoEME's Jordan River Rehabilitation Project conducted biological and hydrological samplings of the Lower Jordan River in addition to a survey of the river's flora to advance the project's Environmental Flow Study. The survey and samples were undertaken at five different rarely accessed locations between the Sea of Galilee and the Dead Sea and will greatly contribute to FoEME's efforts to identify the water needs necessary to rehabilitate the Lower Jordan River ecosystem.
Furthermore, the Jordan River Rehabilitation Project's Jordanian Advisory Committee meeting was held in Amman this month. The meeting brought together key stakeholders including representatives from the Ministries of Planning, Environment and Water and Irrigation as well as experts from universities, IUCN and UNESCO.
The Jordan River Rehabilitation Project is supported by USAID, the Richard and Rhoda Goldman Fund, the Green Environment Fund and the Global Nature Fund.

Our Community GIS project trained selected youth from GWN communities this month to identify the wide range of environmental hazards that exist in their communities. Criteria as to what constitutes a hazard, and learning how to define their origins and consequences on groundwater (per EU standards for evaluation of groundwater hazards) was also studied. The youth then visited sites, marking down the coordinates for future mapping.
At a later stage of the project, they will compare results of the environmental hazards maps produced with their partnering community across the border, furthering the important cross border environmental awareness aspect of the project.
The Community GIS project is supported by the European Union's Partnership for Peace program.

“In the framework of our Good Water Neighbors project, FoEME brought together mayors, municipal representatives, local residents, licensed tour guides and tour operators from Israel and the Palestinian Authority to northern Jordan, in an effort to encourage cross border tourism to Jordan by showcasing our communities’ "Neighbors Paths". The delegation learned about the less-known historical and cultural heritages of the area, as well as the water issues and related challenges facing these communities. At the close of the visit, an Israeli tour guide commented that until now, he has been taking Israeli tourists to visit the “past” (antiquities) in Jordan, however, now, after touring FoEME’s Neighbors Paths, he has realized he has missed out on the “present” and the “future” –actually meeting the people of Jordan and being aware of the challenges they face.
Two additional cross border visits for other GWN Israeli, Palestinian and Jordanian communities are planned for May, furthering tourism promotion, exchanges of knowledge and promoting cross border cooperation.
The Good Water Neighbors project is supported by USAID and SIDA.

In response to the World Bank’s report on restrictions on the Palestinian water sector, which revealed the extent to which water resources and sustainable development are being held hostage to the conflict, FoEME released its own “Model Water Agreement”. This Model Water Accord constitutes a detailed agreement for cooperation in addressing common Israeli and Palestinian water challenges and in managing shared natural resources and calls for the replacement of the Joint Water Committee with a new body where equivalent powers and responsibilities would lie.

FoEME’s Tel Aviv office, being a member of the Sustainable Development Coalition, contributed the Water chapter to the recent publication “Paths to Sustainability VII - Israel and the Climate Crisis; Risks and Economic Opportunities” (Hebrew). The coalition calls on the government of Israel to set clear national targets for reduction of its greenhouse gas emissions as part of a comprehensive climate plan. This policy document was written as part of the preparation process of Israeli environmental NGOs towards the Copenhagen Climate Conference to be held in December 2009.
